The Smooth-Rock Falls Model

This 1,500 sq ft Stavehouse, with 9/12 pitched (37 deg) ridge pole and purlin roof system, was designed as an alternative to the trussed roof approach. The long structural purlins stretch from hidden posts in the gables to load bearing interior walls. This vaulted cathedral option may be of interest to certain clients wanting a more open roofing concept.

Not only does the purlin roof permit simple modifications to the width of the structure within and beyond the stock 24' truss module, but the roof pitch is variable through 4/12, 6/12 and 9/12, etc, simply by modifying the gable post lengths and gable wall in-fill panel configurations. Wall in-fill panel modules are also variable between the normal 4 and 8 foot stock panel widths.

Gable in-fill SIP's, splined to the sides of the purlin posts, produce a very effective gable shear wall. Stavebolt hardware at both ends of the gable posts effectively tie the purlins to the stave frame below to resists uplift forces.

6.5" or thicker roof SIP's, run from the ridge to the wall plate-purlin and cantilever beyond the side walls according to the thickness and strength of the particular SIP and the snow loads found in the installation area, etc.
